I am writing this newsletter from Motu Moana Camp where our Senior English medium classes are having an amazing time at their camp. It has been a real privilege dropping in to visit our camps - it is great to see the cooperation between kaiako and whānau. Having you on our camps really adds to the whānaungatanga and the depth of experience for tamariki. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou!
Thanks to Mr T for daring me to have a go at the slip and slide - such good fun. We will share some pictures and writing from this camp in our final newsletter of the term.
I have been reviewing attendance for all our tamariki and have begun booking appointments with whānau of children whose attendance is of concern ie below 85%. If you are struggling to get your tamariki to school and would like advice or support please give me a call.
Ngā mihi Helen
Whānau Survey Feedback
It has been really good adding the "What are we doing about this?" to your feedback from Term 3/4 last year as I think it clearly shows how much we have been able to respond to your concerns and suggestions. We will do another survey in Term 3/4 of this year. However, you can always email me if you have any ideas for improvement principal@ruakaka.school.nz.
Attendance Update
We know that our tamariki can only flourish in their learning and relationships when they are attending regularly.
Ruakākā attendance statistics so far this year: Overall attendance is 85% Can we get to 90%?
Year 1 are in the lead with 88% Ka pai Year 1! Year 2, Year 3 and Year 6 all have 87% Year 4 have 84% Year 5 have 80% This is how we will be giving feedback on attendance at our Hui a-whānau and in mid-year reports: Miharo/Excellent: Above 90%
Pai/Good: Above 85%
Kia kaha tonu/Concern: Below 85%
We understand that from time to time many issues such as physical or mental health, financial hardship and other challenges can affect attendance - if you need support or advice please give us a call. No judgment - just support!
Te Aronga Pīata / SHINE Focus
Matua Ariki
This week and next week our school wide SHINE focus is Resilience/Manawaroa. Some of our classes having been focusing on this when visiting Harold, though it is a good reminder for us all. Please see the below links of some of the activities that tamariki will be focusing on in class:
Mid-year hui a-whānau and reports
We have listened to your feedback and thought a lot about how we can spend more time with you talking about learning. We would like to spend 15 minutes with every whānau talking about the strengths of each tamaiti and how we can support their next learning steps as we prepare our mid-year reports.
For 2024 we need to do this early next term, as at the end of Term 2 we will have 9 classes moving out of their current rooms and into others. All of our Māori medium classes will move to our new buildings and Rooms 11-14 will move out of their classrooms - two of these classrooms will be removed to make more space for play and Rooms 11/12 will be turned into our new staffroom.
We have set aside a whole day for hui a-whānau on Tuesday 14 May. Classes will not run on this day so that our kaiako can spend 15 minutes with each family.
Appointments will run from 8am to 6pm and every whānau will make a 15 minute appointment to meet teachers. If your time is flexible and you don't work a 9am-5pm work day we would request that you book during the middle of the day so that we can reserve the start and end of the day for those who can only come at those times.
If you would like an online meeting or a phone conversation during that day please ask your child's teacher and they can organise this. Our goal is to meet every whānau and the hui will help us to create a report for your tamaiti which includes goals which have been set together. We will send a link for bookings to begin on Mondayand if we don't hear from you we will make calls to arrange a time that suits.
We begin Term 3 with assessments to see how well each child has progressed. To keep you well informed we will send an update on achievement data straight out of our Student Management System early in Term 3 with an explanation to ensure whānau are better informed about learning.
Within a week of our hui a-whānau on 14th May, you will receive your mid-year report. We hope this is a report that will go on the fridge or the noticeboard to celebrate strengths and remind you of the targets set together, See below for an example of how the report will look. Thanks Whaea Theresa/Mrs. Wells for designing such a shiny looking format!

Whānau Tokens
Matua Ariki
Our whānau system is up, running and in full swing! All tamariki know which whānau they belong to and we meet once a fortnight in our whānau groups. So far we have covered where our tūtohu whenua (natural landmark) stands and its significance to our rohe (area). Our whānau are Piroa which is sometimes referred to as the Brynderwyns, Taranga which is the biggest of the moutere (islands) of the Hen & Chicks, Te Whara which is sometimes referred to as Bream Head, Manaia which we all know of as the significant maunga of Patuharakeke & Pukekauri which is inland from Ruakākā and is home to Pukekauri dam. This year we are collecting SHINE tokens for our whānau. At the moment Piroa is in the lead (Go Piroa - this is the whānau I belong to!) though things can change at any time. SHINE is a big part of who we are so please reinforce our uara (values) at home. Showing Respect/Whakaute, Helpful/Manaakitanga, Inclusive/Kotahitanga, Never Giving Up/Papahueke & Environmental Guardian/Kaitiakitanga.
We are also selling t-shirts for each whānau, which can be found at this link
Tuhituhi Mīharo / Amazing Writing
Phoenix Lewin
Phoenix Lewin from Te Kōrari wrote an amazing piece about why he is proud to be Māori. Phoenix is an example for all tamariki in Te Whānau Harakeke and the whole school in standing proud as a young Māori. Haramai te toki!
Tūtaki i ngā Kaimahi / Meet the Staff
Below is our reintroduction to Whaea Charlene. Each newsletter we will continue to learn about kaimahi / staff of our kura. We also have two new kaiāwhina (teacher aides) and one new kaiako who have recently started at our school. Read about them below.

I tēnei tau, ko au hoki te Kaiwhakahaere o Te Whānau Harakeke.
I am passionate about Te Ao Māori, promoting wellbeing among our staff and having fun with our tamariki. Leading school-wide waiata, dress-up days, and sparking our tamariki's love for learning are highlights for me. Personally, I'm a proud māmā of two amazing tamariki, Bianca, 19, and Marcus, 10. Fun fact: I was expecting Marcus when I started my journey at Ruakākā School back in 2013. Working here brings me immense joy; it's a nurturing environment where Te Ao Māori and our SHINE values thrive. We're blessed with exceptional leadership, dedicated staff, and have the best tamariki in the country at our kura.
Poipoia te kākano, kia puāwai. Nurture the seed, and it will blossom.
Aku mihi,
Whaea Charlene

Hello everyone. I am Jessica Loomis. I graduated from California State University of Monterey Bay with a Bachelor's Degree in Human Communication. I then moved to Wellington where I obtained a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary). I have also taught swimming for many years. I did some relief work and worked as a PE teacher and primary school teacher in Maungaturoto.
I grew up on the Central Coast of California. When I was 19 I moved to Hawaii and lived there for many years. I then spent some time traveling in Central America. I married my husband Morgan in 2008, and shortly after moved to Wellington. There, we had two children, Orion and Pearl. After living in Wellington for 10 years, we moved to Waipu in 2020.
I enjoy surfing, ocean swimming, paddling surf canoe, and volunteering as a lifeguard at the Cove. I also love to paint and sew, and I am a beekeeper.
I am very excited to be working in room 2 in the mornings and having the opportunity to get to know the tamariki in the community, and their whānau.
Te Taupahī o Te Whānau Harakeke / Te Whānau Harakeke Camp
Te Kōrari
Anei he tuhinga e pā ana ki te wheako pai o Te Whānau Harakeke i te taupahī Carey Park, nō Te Kōrari / Here is some writing from Te Kōrari about the awesome experience they had a Carey Park Camp.
Te Taupahī mō Te Whānau Harakeke / Carey Park Camp
Two weeks ago Te Whānau Harakeke travelled to Carey Park Camp in Auckland. This was an adventure camp that provided all tamariki with the full camp experience - Flying Fox, Confidence Course, Archery, River Games, Rock Climbing & Air Rifles. Tamariki also got to take part in ‘TWH has talent’ and went down a Slip and slide, played many games in the whare Kori Tinana (gym) as well as ate some amazing kai!
He mihi nunui ki ngā kaiāwhina! A big thank you to our whānau helpers who were amazing! We greatly appreciate all of the awhi that you gave and could not have done it without you.
Another thank you to One Big Adventures who were amazing hosts! All of the tamariki greatly enjoyed the stay at Carey Park!
Ruakākā River Clean Up
Kaitiakitanga is one of our SHINE values. Last Year Paige Cave (now in year 6) wrote a letter to Helen, our tumuaki, proposing a river clean up. On Tuesday last week, Mr T took a group of tamariki and parents to work alongside a group of Geography students from Bream Bay College to bring Paige's idea to life. A big thank you to BARRACUDA kayaks for their support with this project.
Brazilian Jui jitsu
We are very appreciative of the work of Jonathon Woodhead and his team from Hold Down Brazilian Jiu jitsu. They have sourced funding to provide mats for us to use and offer 2 free classes every Friday for Y1-4 and Year 5-6 tamariki. The 10 week Self Control Program is designed for tamariki to engage with, participate in and learn martial arts. Johnny strongly believes that encouraging young people to engage in self-defence and martial arts can deeply improve their social behaviour, physical fitness, self control and confidence.
We hope that we will be able to continue to offer this programme next term to 2 more groups.
New Sign In System - VisTab
We have a new sign in system. As our school is growing, it creates a safer way for us to monitor who is on our school site. When you arrive at school, come in to the office and sign yourself in via the tablet that is attached to the front desk. When you sign in for the first time, there will be Health and Safety guidelines to read and accept. You will only need to do this the first time you sign in. Also if tamariki are late to school, they will need to come in to the office and sign themselves in on the tablet. Amy or Kelly will be able to help if needed.
Garden To Table / Māra ki te tēpu
Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club is for any of our tamariki that would like to have some breakfast, even if they have already eaten at home. It is Weet-bix and milk in the Multi Purpose Room from 8.20am every morning. Last week we had over 50 tamariki in for breakfast on Thursday alone. Its great to see so many kids coming in. A huge thank you to our Support Staff who organise this every morning for our tamariki.

Jacob Moke and Noah Porteous have been helping Jimmy (our caretaker) to build a stand for the helmets and scooters which is now outside Te Rito and Te Pihinga.

PTA - Easter Raffle / Rāwhara mō Te Aranga
One week to go!!! Please continue to sell the raffle tickets for the Easter Hamper. We have received lots of wonderful donations. If you haven't already, and would like to donate an Easter item (remember this doesn't have to be chocolate), please bring in to the office by tomorrow (Friday 22nd). Last day to bring in tickets (whether sold or not) and the money, is Tuesday 26th March. The raffle will be drawn on Wednesday 27th March. We will contact you if you are a winner and will post on Seesaw and Facebook.
If you are not in a hurry and would like to save on shipping costs, there is a link on the website to a form to fill in to place your order. When we have 20 orders we will process them and get them all delivered to the school.
Thank you to Emma for offering the Hoodies and Tees at cost price to our school whānau.
Please make sure your tamariki has a change of clothes in their bag every day. We only have a small amount of clothes in the office in case of emergencies, so we may need to call you to bring in some clothes for your child.

Pukapuka Party Postponed
Our apologies, but we've had to postpone this year's Pukapuka Party as we haven't been able to secure enough funding to run it in March.
We have rescheduled for term 3 - Saturday 21st September. This time we will hold it in the afternoon to avoid clashing with winter sports.
We'd also like to set up a new organising committee so will arrange a meeting soon for that. Any volunteers would be greatly appreciated.
