Last week we took our whole kura up to Takahiwai Marae to learn about Matariki. As we prepare our tamariki to flourish as young people and adults we want them to feel confident and ready for all the opportunities life brings. Being confident in Te Ao Māori is an important part of being a New Zealander and we were really proud of the way that our tamariki listened and learned. Our Kapa Haka are busy preparing for the Matariki Festival next week.
Kaiako have been assessing our tamariki over the last couple of weeks and early next term we will send out an update on how they are doing. More about this next term!
Finally, we are planning for the blessing of our new classrooms. If you haven't yet let us know if you are coming to the blessing please click here to RSVP via this form. Please do this by Monday at 9am - this allows us to ensure we have enough kai for parakuihi | breakfast.
We are feeling grateful that we have power and are able to open kura today. Have a fantastic weekend!
Ngā mihi Helen
Attendance Update
Whaea Helen has been meeting with whānau of tamariki whose attendance is low. Her goal is to look at patterns of attendance and talk about a plan to support and make some changes. If you are struggling with attendance please call the office and make an appointment to have a chat and see how we can support.
Matariki
Lollies and Raro
We have seen a recent increase in tamariki bringing lollies and raro into school and sharing these around. Please ensure that your tamaiti does not come to school with any of these items. We are very fortunate to have a food in schools program and encourage healthy eating at Ruakākā School. If you feel that your child needs extra kai, healthy snacks such as fruit and vegetables are encouraged. If tamariki are seen with raro or lollies, kaiako will take these away and let whānau know. Thank you for you help with this matter.
Te Aronga Pīata / SHINE Focus
Matua Ariki
This week and next week our school wide SHINE focus is Ngā Rā Ua / Wet Days. The rainy season is upon us, so we are using the below resources to teach our tamariki about expected behaviour during these times.
Rerenga Kōrero o te Wiki / Phrase of the Week
Each week of this term, classes are provided with a reo Māori phrase of the week, as well as a poster that covers a kaupapa that we want to (or are) learning about:
Below is the phrase of the week for week 7 & 8 as well as our kaupapa of each week - Email Sign-offs & Matariki
Whānau Hōu / New Students
In the last few weeks we have had new whānau start at Ruakākā School. If you meet them, please make them feel welcome. Since our last newsletter we have had two new tamariki. They are Ian Duenas & Anna Robertson. Nau mai, haere mai ki te kura o Ruakākā.
Calender Art
School of Rock
Huge thanks to Bream Bay College for hosting School of Rock 2024. We are so proud of our tamariki!
Ruakākā School had 10 students join other students from our Bream Bay Schools at the College to create music together. The students shared their musical skills and were then put into rock bands. Each band had some mentors from the College support them to learn a song and get it ready for a performance on the second day. There were 5 bands created. Then next they each chose a song and combined so well, working together to stick to the beat and gel together as a band. Whānau came and enjoyed all of the students' hard mahi and saw the journey and learning that had occured over the 2 days. This is a real highlight for our students and an experience that we look forward to offering every year. Ka pai to our Ruakākā students who SHINED throughout this opportunity - ROCK ON!!
Creatives in Schools - Augmented reality
A group of Y5/6 ākonga had a great day of art and creativity with Ben Kenobi of Ara Journeys on Thursday. All ākonga have retold stories in art on their pou. Ben will now turn these into digital artefacts. You will see from the photos that they have used the app to see what their pou will look like 3D when viewed. Thanks to Tania Coutts for her work with this roopū of talented students.
Tūtaki i ngā Kaimahi / Meet the Staff
In each newsletter we will continue to learn about kaimahi / staff of our kura. Read about them below.
Nau mai, haere mai Whaea Donna. New kaiako in Room 9:
Donna Marie Most, māmā of two teenage boys Toby and Harrison. Originally from West Auckland and comfortable to admit it. My teaching exploits range from new entrants to intermediate students. My favourite learning areas are sports, art and drama. I'm excited to be teaching in the junior school for the rest of this year. My favourite moments are when children take leaps forward in their learning.
Hello, I’m Alesha Stewart and I have worked at Ruakākā Primary for 3 years. I have several roles at Ruakaka school. All part time but they almost add up to being full time!
My three roles are running the After School Care programme every day, assisting with the Lunches in Schools programme twice a week and teaching cooking in the Garden to Table programme the other two mornings.
I love working with children and food so both my loves are being fulfilled. Im creative and have a new hobby nearly every few weeks that I often involve the children in.
I have a son who was a previous student here who’s now at college.
Ruakākā school is a busy and vibrant school so there is never a dull moment!

Winter Sports Tournament at One Tree Point
Thursday 6th June, some of our senior tamariki went to One Tree Point School to compete in the annual Winter Sports Events. We had students playing Hockey, Football, Netball and Rippa Rugby. The main 'goal' for the day was for all students to play and enjoy the fun!
Rippa Rugby on Eden Park
On Saturday 8th June, Jacob Moke, Nathan Davis-Kahui, Noah Porteous, Boston Porteous and Darroll Morunga all went and played Ripper Rugby on Eden Park in Auckland. They were all chosen for their rugby team - Jacob plays for Horahora and the other boys play for Waipu U11s. Their teams entered The Little Blues Eden Park Curtain Raiser Competition that were chosen along with 2 other Northland teams to play.
Kahui Ako Mathex Competition at One Tree Point School.
On Friday the 21st of June I had the privilege of taking 3 teams of 4 students to take part in the local Mathex Competition at OTP School. Mathex is a fast paced collaborative math problem solving competition. Students were presented with a range of word problems that required careful reading and thinking to solve. As one question was answered, they had to sprint to the front and have it marked by one of Bream Bay College’s students, and then either return to try again or take back a new question if correct. All of our teams represented themselves and our kura very well, and used their SHINE values to succeed, particularly ‘Never Giving Up’! Our one Year 5 team came second, and one of our two year 6 teams came first equal, and only moved to second place in a sudden death tie-breaker round at the end. Exciting! Our two teams that placed will move on to the Whangārei level event that will take place a little later this year.
Congratulations to ALL the students who trained and worked hard to give it their best efforts on the day, Ngā Mihi koutou mo to mahi whakamiharo! - Matua Jeremy
The Incredible Years Autism Programme (IYA)
Visit from Ruakākā Fire Station
We were very privileged to have Jase, Mike, Andy and Billy from the Ruakaka Fire station visit us today and talk to us about being a volunteer. The juniors have been learning about volunteers in our community and what they do. Tamariki had the opportunity to ask questions about what it is like to be a volunteer firefighter. A massive Nga Mihi to the volunteers for taking time out of their day for our Tamariki!
Bream Bay College Open Day

Te Māhuri - Ko Toku Tino Tangata i te Ao Katoa. My favourite person in the whole wide world.
Lifewalk
We are really fortunate that Becky from Lifewalk will be supporting our kura as a Wellbeing Mentor. She will be available for 4 hours each week to meet with any students who are needing extra support in a low key way to chill or chat. Becky is a chaplain for LifePoint Church. All conversations/sessions will have parent permission prior and no religious aspects will be part of the sessions. If you would like your tamaiti to be able to talk with Becky please contact the office so that we can set that up.
Introducing Becky: It is a privilege to be available to support the students and amazing teachers here . My whānau : I am a grand-mother, wife, and mother of 3 children & 2 mokopuna . I live in the Bream Bay area and have enjoyed this beautiful local area for 17 years. I understand how tough some of life's challenges are and that is why I am here as a listening ear to any student that wishes to meet up.

World Choir Games
Last Sunday two Northland Choirs had a 'practice run' in preparation for the World Choir Games in July.
The Children's choir - Te Korihi o te Tūī, performed alongside the Adults Choir - Opera North Chamber Choir at the Waipu Coronation Hall. These two choirs which include students from all of our Bream Bay schools ( in the Children's choir) and Mrs Wells ( in the Chamber Choir) have been practicing for months. They will compete in Auckland during the school holidays along with hundreds of other choirs and thousands of singers from around the WORLD.
Their performance on Sunday was enjoyed by a full packed hall and there were so many compliments on the beautiful music made by both choirs.
All the very best to those students and Mrs Wells from Ruakākā School who have worked hard towards this exciting event.
Te Korihi o te Tūī will be performing in The Auckland Town Hall on Thursday 18th July.
Opera North Chamber Choir will be performing in the Concert Chamber at The Town hall on Wednesday 17th July.

Our aim is to share ideas and ways to help clubs be funding savvy as we understand how challenging it is to operate in this financially challenging time.
